His Excellency Mr. Amarendra Khatua, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, and Special Envoy of the Government of India for Sudan and South Sudan, visited Khartoum, Juba and Addis Ababa from May 13-18, 2012.
The Special Envoy visited Khartoum from May 13-15, 2011 and met Secretary General in the Ministry of Petroleum of Government of Sudan and Special Representative of UNSG for Sudan and South Sudan, Mr. Haile Menkerios. He also met officials of ONGC Videsh Limited (OVL), an Indian entity, based in Khartoum.
His Excellency Mr. Amarendra Khatua held meetings with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Government of Republic of South Sudan on May 15, 2012 and exchanged views on bilateral ties and international relations. He also extended an invitation to His Excellency Mr. Salva Kirr, President of the Republic of South Sudan to visit India at a convenient time. The Special Envoy also informed the Government officials about India’s intention to set up a Pan African Telecommunication Project, a Vocational Training Centre, a Rural Technology Park, Agricultural Seed Production-cum-Demonstration Centre and a hospital in the country in the near future. The Special Envoy also met the Minister of Petroleum and Mining.
The Special Envoy also met H.E. Raisedon Zenenga, the Deputy SRSG of UN to South Sudan, Mr. Hiruy Amanuel, Chief of Political Affairs, UNMISS and Ms. Joya Rajadhyaksha, Special Officer, UNMISS and with officials of ONGC Videsh Limited (OVL) of India in South Sudan.
The Special Envoy called on the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Ethiopia, H.E. Mr. Hailemariam Desalegn on May 17, 2012 and briefed him on his visits to Khartoum and Juba. The Deputy Prime Minister appreciated India’s efforts in extending help to South Sudan which needed huge capacity building in the country. The Special Envoy also met and interacted with the Secretary of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union Commission and other officials and held discussions with them.
The Special Envoy urged upon the leadership of Sudan and South Sudan to work towards a mutually agreed solution to all issues so that peace and stability in the region is restored.
